Configuring a Citizen CT-S851II Receipt Printer

The Citizen CT-S851II has been certified for use with the USB and Bluetooth interfaces.


Installing the CT-S851II Printer Driver

The current version as of 2018-01-22 of the Windows Driver is included in the Links section below and latest file versions can be downloaded from the Citizen website (http://www.citizen-systems.co.jp/english/index.html).  The printer should be attached to the computer and powered on prior to installing the Windows Driver.


  1. Double-click the Windows Driver installation file (The Citizen CT-S851II Printer Driver screen appears).
  2. Select Next (The License Agreement screen appears).
  3. Accept the license agreement.
  4. Select Next (The Ready to Install screen appears).
  5. Select Install (The Installation begins and the Port Selection screen appears).
  6. Select USB.
  7. Select OK (The Installation continues and the Windows Security screen is displayed).
  8. Select Install (The Install Completed screen appears).
  9. Select Finish.




Installing the POS Printer Utility

The current version as of 2018-01-22 of the POS Printer Utility is included in the Links section below and the latest versions can be downloaded from the Citizen website (http://www.citizen-systems.co.jp/english/index.html).

  1. Double-click Installation package to start the installer (The CITIZEN POS Printer Utility screen appears).
  2. Select Next (The License Agreement screen appears).
  3. Accept the license agreement.
  4. Select Next (The Destination Folder screen appears).
  5. Select Next (The Ready to Install screen appears).
  6. Select Install (The installation begins and the Install Completed screen appears).
  7. Select Finish.




USB Interface

Installing the Virtual COM Utility

The current version as of 2018-01-22 of the Virtual COM Utility is included in the Links section below and the latest versions can be downloaded from the Citizen website (http://www.citizen-systems.co.jp/english/index.html).

  1. Double-click Installation package to start the installer (The Install screen appears).
  2. Select OK (The Installation continues and the Windows Security screen is displayed).
  3. Select Install (The Installation begins and when completed closes automatically).




Configuring the Virtual Serial Port

  1. Open the Run dialog box by pressing and holding the Windows key, then press the R key.
  2. Type devmgmt.msc
  3. Select OK (The Device Manager window opens).
  4. Expand Ports.
  5. Highlight the ctvrcom Virtual Communication Port (COMx) entries. 

    The COMx portion of this value represents the virtual serial port number that is configured for the printer.  This value is needed for the Cash Register Configuration

    The Virtual COM application configures 2 Virtual ports. The CT-S310II typically uses the lowest COM port value, however, trial and error may be needed during the cash register configuration.

  6. From the Action Dropdown Menu, Select Properties (The Port Properties screen appears).
  7. Select the Port Settings Tab.
  8. Update Bits per second to 115200.

  9. Update Flow Control to Hardware.

    Repeat Steps 6 - 9 for both virtual ports.




Configuring the POS Printer Utility

  1. Start the POS Printer Utility from the Windows Start Menu (The POS Printer Utility screen appears).

  2. Select the 'Use the installed printer port settings' option.

  3. Select the USB S/N Setup option from the menu (The USB S/N Setup screen appears).

  4. Enter the printer's serial number in the New Serial Number text box.

    The printer's serial number can be found on the label on the bottom of the printer.


    Setting the Serial Number value helps ensure the same Port Number is retrieved if the Printer is plugged into a different USB Port.

  5. Select Set (A Warning screen appears).

  6. Select OK (The USB S/N Setup message appears).

  7. Select OK (The serial number is sent to the printer and the USB S/N Setup screen reappears).

  8. Select the Memory Switch Setup option from the menu (The Memory Switch Setup screen appears).

  9. Select the Receive Button (The POS Printer Utility will retrieve the printer's current configuration and reload).

  10. Update Switch No. MSW5-3 (USB Mode) to Virtual COM.

  11. Select the Set Button (The POS Printer Utility will send the new configuration to the printer and reload).

  12. Select the Printer Select option from the menu (The Printer Select screen appears).

  13. Select the 'Use the following printer settings' option

  14. Select the Model name of CT-S851II

  15. Select the Interface type of Serial/VCOM

  16. Select the Detail Button (The Detail Setup screen appears).

  17. Select the Port identified in the Configuring the Virtual Serial Port Number process.

  18. Select OK (The Detail Setup screen closes).

  19. Select the Information button

    The printer will attempt to communicate with the printer.

    If successful, the Printer information screen appears

    If the communication was unsuccessful, try the second port created by the Virtual COM.

  20. Close the Printer Information screen.




Bluetooth Interface

Configuring the POS Printer Utility

  1. Attach the printer via a USB cable.

  2. Start the POS Printer Utility from the Windows Start Menu (The POS Printer Utility screen appears).

  3. Select the 'Use the installed printer port settings' option.

  4. Select the USB S/N Setup option from the menu (The USB S/N Setup screen appears).

  5. Enter the printer's serial number in the New Serial Number text box.

    The printer's serial number can be found on the label on the bottom of the printer.

    Setting the Serial Number value helps ensure the same Port Number is retrieved if the Printer is plugged into a different USB Port.

  6. Select Set (A Warning screen appears).

  7. Select OK (The USB S/N Setup message appears).

  8. Select OK (The serial number is sent to the printer and the USB S/N Setup screen reappears).

  9. Select the Bluetooth Setup option from the menu (The Bluetooth Setup screen appears).

  10. Select the Receive Button (The POS Printer Utility will retrieve the printer's current configuration and reload). 

  11. Take note of the Current PIN Code and Current BT Device Name

    The PIN Code is used when pairing the printer.  If a new PIN Code is desired follow steps 12 - 14  
    The BT Device Name is the name of the printer when paired to the computer.  If a new Device Name is desired follow steps 15 - 17.
  12. Enter the new PIN Code in the New Pin Code text box.
  13. Select Set PIN Code (A Warning screen appears).

  14. Select OK (The serial number is sent to the printer and the Bluetooth Setup screen reappears).

  15. Enter the new Device Name in the New Device Name text box.
  16. Select Set Device Name (A Warning screen appears).

  17. Select OK (The serial number is sent to the printer and the Bluetooth Setup screen reappears).

Pairing the Printer

  1. Disconnect any USB cables attached to the printer.
  2. Open the Run dialog box by pressing and holding the Windows key, then press the R key.
  3. Type bthprops.cpl
  4. Select OK (The Bluetooth Devices window appears).
  5. Select the Printer.
  6. Select Pair (The printer will begin to pair.  Once completed, the status may be listed as connected)

    The pairing is conducted by SSP (Simple Secure Pairing), however, a PIN code is used when the host device does not support SSP.

    It is normal for the Bluetooth Device status to be listed as 'Driver is unavailable'

Confirming the Bluetooth Serial Port Number

  1. Open the Run dialog box by pressing and holding the Windows key, then press the R key.
  2. Type Control Panel
  3. Select OK (The Control Panel opens).
  4. Select Device and Printers (The Device and Printers window opens).
  5. Locate and Right-Click on the CT-S851II printer entry.
  6. Select Properties from the Menu (The CT-S851II Properties windows appears).
  7. Select the Hardware Tab.
  8. Locate the Standard Serial over Bluetooth Link (COMx) entry. 

    The COMx portion of this value represents the bluetooth serial port number that is configured for the printer.  This value is needed for the Cash Register Configuration

Receipt Printer

  1. From the Enterprise Tab of TallyExplorer, select the Register to configure.
  2. Select the Register Properties Link (The Modify Register screen opens to the General tab).

  1. From the Enterprise Tab of TallyExplorer, select the Register to configure.
  2. Select the Register Properties Link (The Modify Register screen opens to the General tab).

  3. Within the Receipt Settings section, set the following values:

    x refers to the port number assigned to the printer.

    xx refers to the width of the paper being used 58MM or 80mm

    Line DelayThe Line Delay forces the cash register to add a delay between each line sent to the printer.  Impact/Inkjet printers, generally, should be configured for a Line Delay of 150 while thermal printers should be 0. TallySoft recommends gradually increasing the Line Delay value as needed in order to prevent a negative impact on the printer's performance.0
  4. Select Save.
  5. Select Exit.

Cash Drawer

  1. From the Enterprise Tab of TallyExplorer, select the Register to configure.
  2. Select the Register Properties Link (The Modify Register screen opens to the Devices tab).
  3. Select the Devices tab.
  4. Within the Cash Drawer section, set the following values:

    x refers to the port number assigned to the printer.

    Has SlotIndicates if the Cash drawer has a slot on the front panel of the drawer.  If Yes, the drawer will only open during cash transactions and expect the slot to be used to insert checks and credit card slips.  If No, the drawer will open for all tender types.

  5. Select Save.
  6. Select Exit.

Adjusting the Paper Cutter

Based on the location of the printer's paper cutter and the configuration of the Receipt Profile and store's configuration, there are instances when the receipt is not cut/torn in the correct location.

Edit an Existing Receipt Footer

To adjust the location of the paper cut down, additional lines will need to be added to the end of the Receipt Footer.  An additional Receipt Profile may be created to prevent existing receipt printers from printing erroneously.

Duplicate a Receipt Profile

  1. From the Enterprise Tab of TallyExplorer, select the Receipt Profile Button (The Receipt Profile window opens).

  2. Expand the tree view and select the Receipt Profile to Duplicate.

  3. From the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT), select Duplicate(The selected Receipt Profile is copied).

  4. Enter a Profile Name.

  5. From the QAT, select Save

Create a New Receipt Footer

  1. From the Enterprise Tab of TallyExplorer, select the Receipt Profile Button (The Receipt Profile window opens).
  2. Expand the tree view and select the Receipt Profile to configure.

  3. Select the Receipt Format tab.
  4. From within the Receipt Footer section, select the Add button from the drop down of the Receipt Footer of the desired transction type (The Add Receipt Footer screen appears).
  5. Enter the Receipt Footer Name.

  6. Select the Identifier.

  7. Enter the Receipt Text to include blank lines at the end.

    Some printers, including the Citizen CT-S851II, truncate blank lines from the end of the receipt.  In this case, each of the additional lines should contain a period (.).  This approach will ensure that the printer advances the paper to the necessary location prior to cutting the paper.

  8. Select Save.
  9. Select Exit.

Repeat the Create New Receipt Footer process for all desired transaction types.

Configure existing Registers to use new Receipt Profile

  1. From the Enterprise Tab of TallyExplorer, select the Register to configure.
  2. Select the Register Properties Link (The Modify Register screen opens to the General tab).
  3. Update the Register Receipt Profile within the General Settings section.
  4. Select Save.
  5. Select Exit.
