Overview

TallyScan is a Palm-based software that collects product inventory data using a Symbol SPT1500, SPT1700 2MB, SPT1700 4MB or SPT1800 4MB scanner.  TallyScan stores a physical count of each product code scanned.  After data collection is completed, the scanner's base unit (connected to a serial port on the PC) acts as a file conduit to synchronize the Symbol scanner with a parent PC.  At that time, the product code, quantity and times scanned are placed in the PC’s scanlist.mdb file.  This database file is then converted into a comma-delimited file that can be imported into the TallySales Physical Inventory application.

If the Symbol Inventory scanner remains without batteries for an extended period of time, the device is reset back to factory defaults and will need to be reloaded.  This can be achieved by following the Identifying the Scanner to the PC section of this article as long as the scanner has previously been identified with the PC.

Installing Palm Desktop

TallyScan is only compatible with Palm Desktop version 4.0.1.   TallyScan will not operate with any other versions of Palm Desktop.

  1. Execute PalmDesktop_401_ENG.exe.
  2. When the "User Account Control" screen appears, click the Continue button (The Palm Desktop Setup Welcome screen appears).
  3. Select Next (The Palm Desktop Setup Pre-Install screen appears).
  4. Select Next (The Palm Desktop Setup Choose Destination Location screen appears).
  5. Select Next (The Palm Desktop Setup Profile screen appears).
  6. Enter TallySoft as the Profile Name.
  7. Select Next (The Installation begins and the Palm Product Registration screen appears).
  8. Select Skip (The Cancel Registration screen appears).
  9. Select Exit Registration (The Perform Mail Setup? screen appears).
  10. Select No (The InstallShield Wizard Complete screen appears).
  11. Select Finish.




Identifying the Scanner to the PC

  1. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  2. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and the Users screen is displayed).
  3. If a new User is needed, Select New. Otherwise, skip to Step 6 (The New User screen appears).
  4. Enter the User's Name.

    Multiple devices can use the same User as long as they are the same model.  As a result, the User should be as descriptive as possible, including the model of the scanner.    For example, a User named "SPT 1700 4MB" can be used for all SPT 1700 4MB Palm Inventory scanners.

  5. Select OK (The Users screen reappears).
  6. Ensure the desired User is highlighted, and select OK (The HotSync process finishes).




AppForge Universal Conduit Runtime Installation

  1. Run UCRunSetup.exe.
  2. When the "User Account Control" screen appears, click the Continue button (The AppForge Universal Conduit Runtime Setup Welcome screen appears).
  3. Select Next (The Ready to Install screen appears).
  4. Select Next (The Installation begins and the Installation Complete screen appears).
  5. Select Finish.




TallyScan Data Source

  1. Open the ODBC Data Source Administrator.

    In 32 bit OS's, the ODBC Data Source Administrator can be opened by selecting the Data Sources (ODBC) option within the Administrative Tools section of the Windows Control Panel.

    In 64 bit OS's, the 32 bit ODBC Data Source Administrator can be accessed by executing odbcad32.exe located in the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder.

  2. With the User DSN tab selected, Select Add (The Create New Data Source screen appears).
  3. Select Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb).
  4. Select Finish (The ODBC Microsoft Access Setup screen appears).
  5. Enter TallyScan as the Data Source Name.
  6. Enter Physical Inventory Application as the Description.
  7. Click on the Select button (The Select Database window will appear).
  8. Locate the Scanlist.MDB file in the MyTallySales\TallyScan\Palm\Conduit folder and select OK (The ODBC Microsoft Access Setup screen appears).
  9. Select OK (The ODBC Data Source Administrator screen appears).
  10. Select OK.




TallyScan Conduit Installation

  1. Execute UCTallyScanInstall.exe (The TallyScan Conduit Setup screen appears).
  2. Define the Application Path.

    The Application Path should point to the MyTallySales\TallyScan folder.  i.e. C:\MyTallySales\TallyScan\

  3. Select Create Conduit.
  4. Select Exit.

The Palm HotSync Manager will need to be restarted if it was running during the TallyScan Conduit Instillation.

To verify the installation of the TallyScan Conduit:
  1. Right-click on the Palm HotSync icon located in the system tray.
  2. Select Custom.
  3. Confirm that TallyScan is listed.




Palm Scanner Configuration

SPT1500 and SPT1700 2MB

   AppForge Booster Installation

  1. Execute Booster_PalmOS.exe (The AppForge Booster for Palm OS Welcome screen appears).
  2. Select Next (The License Agreement screen appears).
  3. Accept the License Agreement and Select Next (The Setup Type screen appears).
  4. Select Complete (The Ready to Install screen appears).
  5. Select Install (The installation begins and the Install Booster to Device screen appears).
  6. Select Install (The Booster Install Tool screen appears).
  7. Ensure Palm OS is selected as the Available Device.
  8. Select Install Booster (The Select Name screen appears).
  9. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  10. Select OK (The InstallBooster screen appears).
  11. Select OK (The InstallBooster screen closes).
  12. Select Close (The Booster Install Tool screen closes).
  13. Select Next (The Installation Complete screen appears).
  14. Select Finish.
  15. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  16. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and the booster is installed on the device).

    If the Booster needs to be reloaded to the scanner, the Booster Install Tool can be accessed from the Windows Start Menu by selecting Programs > AppForge Mobile VB > Booster Install Tool.

   TallyScan Installation

  1. Execute TallyScan2MB Symbol.prc  (The Install Tool 4.0 screen appears).
  2. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  3. Select OK (The Install Tool Screen appears).
  4. Select Done.
  5. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  6. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and TallyScan is installed on the device).

If the scanner remains without batteries for an extended period of time, the device is reset back to factory defaults and will need to be reloaded.


SPT1550

   AppForge Booster Installation

  1. Execute EnterpriseBoosterEval.Net_PalmOS.exe (The AppForge Enterprise Device Definition Eval for Palm OS Welcome screen appears).

  2. Select Next (The License Agreement screen appears).
  3. Accept the License Agreement and Select Next (The Setup Type screen appears).
  4. Select Complete (The Ready to Install screen appears).
  5. Select Install (The installation begins and the Install Device Definition to Device screen appears).
  6. Select Install (The Booster Install Tool screen appears).
  7. Ensure Palm OS 3.1 to 4.x is selected as the Available Device.
  8. Ensure Enterprise is selected.
  9. Select Install Booster (The Select Name screen appears).
  10. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  11. Select OK (The InstallBooster screen appears).
  12. Select OK (The InstallBooster screen closes).
  13. Select Close (The Booster Install Tool screen closes).
  14. Select Next (The Installation Complete screen appears).
  15. Select Finish.
  16. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  17. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and the booster is installed on the device).

    If the Booster needs to be reloaded to the scanner, the Booster Install Tool can be accessed from the Windows Start Menu by selecting Programs > AppForge > Booster Install Tool.

   TallyScan Installation

  1. Execute TallyScan2MB Symbol.prc  (The Install Tool 4.0 screen appears).
  2. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  3. Select OK (The Install Tool Screen appears).
  4. Select Done.
  5. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  6. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and TallyScan is installed on the device).

   Evaluation Reset Tool Installation

  1. Execute AFEvaluationReset.PRC  (The Install Tool 4.0 screen appears).
  2. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  3. Select OK (The Install Tool Screen appears).
  4. Select Done.
  5. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  6. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and Evaluation Reset Tool is installed on the device).

   SPT1550 Device Module Installation

  1. Execute SPT1550DeviceModule.prc (The Install Tool 4.0 screen appears).
  2. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  3. Select OK (The Install Tool Screen appears).
  4. Select Done.
  5. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  6. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and SPT1550 Device Module is installed on the device).

If the scanner remains without batteries for an extended period of time, the device is reset back to factory defaults and will need to be reloaded.


SPT1700 4MB

   AppForge Booster Installation

  1. Execute APPFORGE BOOSTER INSTALL V 6.5.2.EXE (The AppForge Crossfire Client for Palm OS Welcome screen appears).

  2. Select Next (The License Agreement screen appears).
  3. Accept the License Agreement and Select Next (The Setup Type screen appears).
  4. Select Complete (The Ready to Install screen appears).
  5. Select Install (The installation begins and the Installation Complete screen appears).
  6. Select the Launch Client Installation Tool checkbox.
  7. Select Finish (The Crossfire Client Installation Tool Welcome screen appears).
  8. Select Next (The User Information screen appears).
  9. Select the Evaluation Deployment checkbox.
  10. Select Next (The Select Target screen appears).
  11. Select the Select By Device Name radio button.
  12. Select Symbol - SPT1700 from the list of devices.
  13. Select Next (The Install Crossfire Client screen appears).
  14. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  15. Select Next (The Status screen appears).
  16. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  17. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and the booster is installed on the device.  The Installation Complete screen appears).

  18. Select Done.

    If the Booster needs to be reloaded to the scanner, the Booster Install Tool can be accessed from the Windows Start Menu by selecting Programs > AppForge > Crossfire Clients > Install Client for PalmOS.

   TallyScan Installation

  1. Execute TallyScan4MB Symbol.prc  (The Install Tool 4.0 screen appears).
  2. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  3. Select OK (The Install Tool Screen appears).
  4. Select Done.
  5. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  6. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and TallyScan is installed on the device).

   Evaluation Reset Tool Installation

  1. Execute AFEvaluationReset.PRC  (The Install Tool 4.0 screen appears).
  2. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  3. Select OK (The Install Tool Screen appears).
  4. Select Done.
  5. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  6. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and Evaluation Reset Tool is installed on the device).

If the scanner remains without batteries for an extended period of time, the device is reset back to factory defaults and will need to be reloaded.


SPT1800

   AppForge Booster Installation

  6. Select the Launch Client Installation Tool checkbox.
  7. Select Finish (The Crossfire Client Installation Tool Welcome screen appears).
  8. Select Next (The User Information screen appears).
  9. Select the Evaluation Deployment checkbox.
  10. Select Next (The Select Target screen appears).
  11. Select the Select By Device Name radio button.
  12. Select Symbol - SPT1800 from the list of devices.
  13. Select Next (The Install Crossfire Client screen appears).
  14. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  15. Select Next (The Status screen appears).
  16. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  17. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and the booster is installed on the device.  The Installation Complete screen appears).

  18. Select Done.

    If the Booster needs to be reloaded to the scanner, the Booster Install Tool can be accessed from the Windows Start Menu by selecting Programs > AppForge > Crossfire Clients > Install Client for PalmOS.

   TallyScan Installation

  1. Execute TallyScan4MB Symbol.prc  (The Install Tool 4.0 screen appears).
  2. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  3. Select OK (The Install Tool Screen appears).
  4. Select Done.
  5. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  6. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and TallyScan is installed on the device).

   Evaluation Reset Tool Installation

  1. Execute AFEvaluationReset.PRC  (The Install Tool 4.0 screen appears).
  2. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  3. Select OK (The Install Tool Screen appears).
  4. Select Done.
  5. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  6. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and Evaluation Reset Tool is installed on the device).

   SPT1800 Device Module Installation

  1. Execute SPT1800DeviceModule.prc (The Install Tool 4.0 screen appears).
  2. Select the User Name of the scanner to load the booster on.
  3. Select OK (The Install Tool Screen appears).
  4. Select Done.
  5. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  6. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and SPT1550 Device Module is installed on the device).

If the scanner remains without batteries for an extended period of time, the device is reset back to factory defaults and will need to be reloaded.




Testing the Scanner

  1. Scan several barcodes.
  2. Place the Scanner into the HotSync Cradle.
  3. Select the HotSync button on the Cradle (The HotSync process begins and the TallyScan Select a File Name screen appears).

  4. Enter a File Name in which the scan list will be stored.
  5. Select OK (The TallyScan Select a File Name screen closes and the HotSync process completes).
  6. Navigate to the MyTallySales\TallyScan\Palm\Files folder.
  7. Ensure the file created in step 4 exists.
  8. Open the file using Notepad and confirm the contents.




Rebooting the Scanner

From time to time it may be necessary to reboot the scanner which is usually caused by a fatal error encounter by the scanner.

  1. Remove the battery compartment's cover.
  2. Press the Reset button which is to the right of the battery.
  3. Follow the on screen instructions to verify the date and time settings,




Resetting the Scanner to Factory Defaults

If an incorrect booster is installed on the scanner, the scanner will be required to be reset back to factory defaults.

  1. Remove the battery compartment's cover.
  2. Press and hold the Reset button which is to the right of the battery.
  3. Press and hold the RED Power button.
  4. Release the Reset Button.
  5. Release the RED Power button.
  6. Select Yes to reset all data.

    To select Yes, press the upper portion of one of the two crescent shaped buttons on the front of the scanner.
  7. Follow the on screen instructions to Calibrate the touchscreen
  8. Follow the on screen instructions to set the date and time settings,
